Corridor design

Corridors that work for everyone.

The one space every resident uses every day, and the one nobody specifies on purpose. It usually gets whatever the bedrooms had left over. Same corridor, three sets of details.

Three environments

WayfindingDementiaMeaningful artwork rather than decoration, colour contrast at the handrail and destination cues that mean something to the person walking. A corridor that reassures is one that answers where am I going.

SightlinesBrain injury and hospitalWide passing places, handrails to both sides, brighter and more even lighting, clear sightlines end to end. Fatigue and processing load are the constraint, so the route has to be readable at a glance.

ImpactHigh dependencyWall protection at trolley height, corner guards, durable easy clean finishes. This corridor takes hoists and beds daily, and plasterboard loses that argument within a year.

Wall protection is the line most often cut and the one that returns fastest. A corridor redecorated every eighteen months because a hoist keeps catching the same corner costs more over five years than cladding the lower half once.

Specifying to a tolerance

Three millimetres decides whether a fire door is a fire door.

A certificated FD30S doorset installed with the wrong gaps performs like a plain door. Nothing about it looks wrong, the paperwork is in order, and the only way to know is to measure. These are the three figures worth carrying in your head.

2 to 4mmHead and both sidesMeasured at several points down the leading edge, not one. Doors drop from the top as hinges wear, so a door that handed over at three can be eight at the top four years later and still look square at eye level.

Per the certificateThresholdThe figure comes from the doorset certificate, not from habit. Where smoke control is required the gap needs a seal or a drop down device rather than generous clearance, because smoke moves long before fire does.

ContinuousIntumescent and smoke sealsUnbroken around head and stiles, undamaged, and never painted. Corridor redecoration is where fire doors quietly stop working, and a painted strip cannot expand.

BS 8214 gives the gap. The certificate gives the threshold. Neither tells you that a three millimetre feeler gauge costs less than a coffee and settles the argument on site in ten seconds.
