Could a heat pump work for your care home?

Heat pump suitability depends on building fabric, radiator sizing, hot-water demand and electrical capacity -- not a straight swap for a gas boiler. What to check before you commission a survey.

What are you trying to work out?

A care home runs on a different clock to a house -- occupied around the clock, with domestic hot-water demand a family home never sees (baths and showers spread across the day for every resident, a commercial laundry, kitchens on a schedule), and heating that has to hold a consistent, comfortable temperature for residents who may not be able to tell you a room has gone cold. None of that rules a heat pump out. It does mean the assessment that gets you there needs to look like a commercial mechanical design, not a domestic quote.

Before you accept a quote

  1. Has a proper heat-loss calculation been done for the building, rather than sizing from the old boiler’s output?
  2. Has the existing electrical supply capacity been confirmed sufficient for the running load?
  3. Has the radiator/emitter schedule been assessed against the target flow temperature?
  4. Is there confirmed plant space for the outdoor unit and any buffer or thermal store it needs?
  5. Has hot-water demand been assessed for actual resident numbers and usage pattern, not assumed from the old system?
  6. Has current BUS/grant eligibility been checked against the live scheme rules for this property, not assumed from a headline figure?
