Fire door inspector qualifications: FDIS and BM TRADA Q-Mark explained

NFCC recommends that fire door inspections in care homes are carried out by a third-party certified inspector. This guide explains both main schemes and how to verify certification.

Why this matters

A fire door inspection from an uncertified inspector carries little evidential weight with the Fire and Rescue Service.

What to do
  • 1For FDIS certification: check the inspector is on the FDIS register at fdis.co.uk/find-an-inspector.
  • 2For BM TRADA Q-Mark: check at bmtrada.com/find-a-certificated-company.
  • 3Ask the inspector to confirm which standard they inspect to, typically BS 8214:2016.
  • 4Ensure the inspection report identifies each door, its location, condition and any remedial action required.
