The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS), administered by CITB, is the standard for demonstrating occupational competence on UK construction and maintenance sites.
Why this matters
Allowing workers without the correct CSCS card on site creates liability risk and may invalidate contractor insurance.
What to do
- 1Require all contractors to confirm site workers hold a valid CSCS card before work starts.
- 2Check the card colour matches the role: Green (labourer), Blue (skilled worker), Gold (supervisor), Black (manager).
- 3Verify any CSCS card at cscscard.org.uk/check.
- 4For specialist trades (gas, electrical, asbestos), CSCS is a baseline and trade-specific certification is also required.
