Weekly fire alarm testing in care homes: what the log must contain and how long to keep it

BS 5839-1 requires that fire detection and alarm systems in care homes are tested weekly, with results recorded. The test must include at least one call point per test, rotating through the building over time so all call points are tested at intervals.

Why this matters

A fire alarm log with gaps even short ones is a red flag for any inspector. The log is evidence that the system works and is being maintained. Without it, you cannot demonstrate compliance with BS 5839-1 even if the system itself is in perfect order.

What to do
  • 1Establish a written weekly test schedule identifying which call point will be tested on which week.
  • 2Record every test result in a bound logbook or equivalent date, time, call point tested, outcome, tester's name and signature.
  • 3Retain fire alarm logs for a minimum of three years longer if your insurer or FRS has specified a different period.
