Before any contractor works on your building, verify they hold the right qualifications. This guide covers the key certifications, cards and registrations to check for each trade.
Why this matters
Engaging an unqualified contractor can invalidate your insurance, void compliance certificates, and expose you to prosecution if something goes wrong.
What to do
- 1Gas: check the engineer is on the Gas Safe Register at gassaferegister.co.uk and ask to see their ID card.
- 2Electrical: check the contractor is NICEIC or ECA registered at niceic.com or eca.co.uk.
- 3Fire doors: check the inspector holds FDIS certification or BM TRADA Q-Mark at fdis.co.uk.
- 4Asbestos: check the contractor holds an HSE asbestos licence at hse.gov.uk/asbestos/licensing.
- 5Construction: all site workers should carry a valid CSCS card. Verify at cscscard.org.uk.
