CAR 2012 Regulation 10 requires that any employee who may encounter asbestos in their work receives suitable awareness training. In care homes, this includes maintenance operatives, grounds staff, decorators, cleaners and any staff who may access service voids, ceiling spaces or building fabric.
Why this matters
Asbestos-related disease kills more people in the UK than road accidents each year. Cleaners, maintenance operatives and decorators in pre-2000 buildings are at risk if they work without awareness of where ACMs are located. Regulation 10 training is not optional and the record must show name, date, provider and topics covered.
What to do
- 1Identify all staff roles that may bring workers into contact with building fabric and confirm all are included in your asbestos awareness training register.
- 2Ensure training covers: what asbestos is and where it is commonly found, how to identify materials that may contain asbestos, health risks of fibre inhalation, and the reporting procedure if suspect material is found.
- 3Refresh training every 3 years at minimum and on any change of role that increases the likelihood of encountering building fabric. Record the refresher date alongside the original certificate.
- 4Provide all relevant staff with a plain-English summary of your ACM register locations so they know which areas contain managed ACMs and what not to disturb.
