HSE Approved Code of Practice L8 requires that care homes implement a written Legionella control scheme including regular water temperature checks. Here is what must be recorded and how often.
Why this matters
A gap in Legionella monitoring records is one of the most common findings in care home H&S enforcement actions. CQC and HSE both treat it seriously. In a Legionella outbreak, missing records will feature prominently in any investigation.
What to do
- 1Check that hot water is stored at 60C and distributed at 50C+ -- measure at sentinel outlets monthly.
- 2Check that cold water is stored and distributed below 20C -- measure at sentinel outlets monthly.
- 3Flush all outlets used less than weekly and log temperature, date, location and person conducting the check.
- 4Service all thermostatic mixing valves annually and record TMV performance temperatures -- this is a common gap.
