Automatic door closers: specification and maintenance requirements updated

BS EN 1154 requires door closers on fire-rated doors to be maintained and replaced at the point of failure. New manufacturer guidance clarifies inspection intervals for overhead and concealed closers.

Why this matters

A failed door closer renders the fire door non-compliant. It counts as a defective fire door in any FRS or CQC audit even if the door leaf itself is in perfect condition.

What to do
  • 1Include door closer function checks in your six-monthly fire door inspection log results per door.
  • 2Replace any closer that fails to return the door to the frame within the specified time under BS EN 1154.
  • 3Ensure replacements are CE-marked and appropriate for the door weight and usage frequency.
