LRV is cited throughout care home dementia design guidance as a 30-point rule of thumb, but the actual guidance is more specific than that -- and gets it backwards for level flooring, where too much contrast is the hazard, not too little.
Light Reflectance Value is a measure of the proportion of usable light a surface reflects when illuminated, scored from 0 (notional pure black) to 100 (notional pure white). It is a paint, tile or floor covering manufacturer stated figure, not something estimated by eye -- request the LRV figure for any specified finish rather than judging contrast from a colour swatch or a screen, since perceived colour contrast and measured LRV contrast do not always agree, particularly for residents with age-related or dementia-related visual perception changes.
DSDC design guidance recommends a minimum 30-point LRV difference between elements that need to be clearly and reliably distinguished from one another: a door against its surrounding wall, a handrail against its background wall, a toilet seat against the pan and the pan against the floor, a light switch or door sign against the door it sits on. Below this threshold, residents with reduced contrast sensitivity (a common feature of both normal ageing and dementia) may not reliably perceive the boundary between the two surfaces, which affects both wayfinding (finding a door) and safety (locating a grab rail or the edge of a toilet seat).
For flooring at a single continuous level -- for example where a corridor floor meets a room floor with no step or threshold -- the guidance runs the other way: DSDC recommends a maximum 10-point LRV difference between the adjoining floor surfaces, ideally under 8 points. A strong colour or tonal change in a level floor can be perceived by a resident with dementia as a step, hole or obstacle, causing an unnecessary hesitation or fall-avoidance stopping behaviour at a location that is not actually a hazard. This is the inverse of the door/wall rule and is the single most common LRV specification error: a specifier who correctly applies high contrast to doors and handrails sometimes also applies it to floor transitions by habit, which actively works against the wayfinding purpose it is meant to serve.
Request LRV figures for every finish being specified in a scheme -- paint, floor covering, door and door frame, sanitaryware, grab rails and handrails -- and check the actual numeric difference between adjoining pairs before ordering, rather than relying on a visual impression from samples held next to each other under different lighting to how the room will actually be lit. Where a specific LRV figure is not published by the manufacturer, request it directly rather than substituting an estimate; LRV is a standard, testable figure and any contract-grade product aimed at the healthcare or care sector should be able to supply it.
LRV contrast specification is frequently treated as a dementia-unit-only requirement, but a portion of any general care home population will have age-related visual impairment regardless of cognitive status, and Building Regulations Part M general accessibility contrast requirements apply across the whole building, not just designated dementia areas. Specifying LRV contrast correctly throughout a care home, not only in units explicitly designated for dementia care, benefits a wider proportion of the resident population than the specification is often assumed to cover.
