The Construction Skills Certification Scheme, administered under the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) umbrella, is the recognised standard for demonstrating that an individual working on a construction or maintenance site holds the relevant occupational qualification and health and safety awareness for their role. A CSCS card is not itself a trade qualification -- it confirms the holder has passed the required health, safety and environment test and holds an underlying qualification appropriate to their card category.
CSCS cards are colour-coded by category, ranging from labourer-level cards through to cards for those holding NVQ or equivalent qualifications, supervisory cards, and manager-level cards. When engaging a contractor, checking that the card category matches the level of work being carried out is as important as confirming a card is present at all -- a labourer-level card holder should not be the person independently carrying out skilled trade work.
CSCS cards can be checked directly via the official CSCS smart check service using the card number, which confirms whether the card is valid, its category, and its expiry date. This check should be carried out for any contractor or individual worker attending site for the first time, rather than relying on the physical appearance of the card alone, since cards can expire or be misused.
Allowing individual workers onto your site without the correct CSCS card for their role creates liability exposure if that person is involved in an incident, since it undermines the argument that the site was being managed to an appropriate competency standard. It can also affect the main contractor's own insurance position, since many contractor liability policies are conditional on only using appropriately certified labour, and a lapse can affect cover for the whole job, not just the uncertified individual.
A simple sign-in process for any contractor or trade attending site, recording the CSCS card details checked alongside the standard site induction, creates a straightforward audit trail that demonstrates due diligence. This is particularly important in a care home setting where visiting contractors are working around vulnerable residents, and the standard of care expected in vetting who is allowed on site is correspondingly higher than in a typical commercial environment.
