Hoist slings are lifting accessories under LOLER 1998 and must be examined by a competent person every 6 months. A separate sling register is required. Slings without a current examination report must be removed from use and CQC inspectors check.
Why this matters
Slings that fail can cause residents to fall during transfer. Most care homes manage hoist examinations reasonably well but overlook slings entirely. A sling used beyond its examination date, or with no examination record at all, is a serious breach of LOLER and a direct safeguarding risk.
What to do
- 1Create a sling register listing every sling by unique ID, material type (disposable or reusable), SWL, resident it is assigned to (if individual), purchase date and last examination date.
- 2Disposable slings should not be reused beyond their intended life manufacturer guidance on reuse limits must be followed.
- 3All reusable slings must be included in the 6-monthly LOLER examination alongside the hoist.
- 4Damaged, heavily soiled or unidentifiable slings must be removed from use and not returned until examined or replaced.
- 5Train staff that sling inspection before each use (visual check for tears, fraying, stitching failure) is a duty under LOLER Regulation 8.
