HSE L8 ACOP requires that calorifiers store water at a minimum of 60C and that this temperature is confirmed and recorded at a minimum monthly. Water must achieve 60C within one hour of heating from cold and reach all distribution points at 55C or above within one minute of running.
Why this matters
A calorifier storing water below 60C is not merely a compliance gap it is a live Legionella colonisation risk. Monthly temperature logging is both a statutory requirement and an early-warning system. Missing or incomplete records make it impossible to demonstrate the system was under control.
What to do
- 1Confirm your calorifier thermostat is set to 60C and verify actual stored temperature with a calibrated thermometer monthly.
- 2Record every temperature reading date, time, calorifier identity, temperature measured and operative name.
- 3If any reading is below 60C, escalate immediately: isolate the outlet, investigate the cause and do not reinstate until the temperature issue is resolved.
