R-value ratings, pendulum test scores and which finishes are appropriate for care home wet rooms.
Falls are the most common serious incident in care homes, and wet bathrooms are the highest-risk location. The Health and Safety Executive's guidance document HSG 195 (Reducing Slipping Risks) and HTM 61 (Health Technical Memorandum on flooring) both set out minimum slip-resistance requirements. For wet barefoot or wet-shod areas in a care context, the floor must be specified to the highest slip-resistance classifications.
Slip resistance is measured in two ways. The pendulum test (BS 7976-2) produces a Pendulum Test Value (PTV): below 24 is high risk, 25-35 is moderate risk, 36+ is low risk. For wet areas in care homes, target a minimum PTV of 36 wet. The R-value system (German BGR 181 standard, widely used in the UK) rates flooring from R9 (minimum for wet-shod) to R13 (maximum, for areas with oils and fats). For care home wet rooms, specify a minimum R11 for tile or R10 for vinyl with additional surface texture.
Ceramic and porcelain tiles are durable and hygienic but the smooth surface of many wall tiles is inadequate for floors in wet rooms. Specify porcelain tiles with a minimum R11 rating and a PTV of 36+ wet. Small-format tiles (mosaic or 100x100mm) create more grout lines and tend to have higher effective slip resistance -- useful in small wet rooms. Note that grout joints must be specified correctly: use a flexible, waterproof grout in the wet zone, not standard cementitious grout. The tile specification must be approved by the tanking system manufacturer if the waterproofing warranty is to remain valid.
Slip-resistant vinyl (often called safety flooring) is the most common choice in care home wet rooms because it is fast to install, easy to clean, warm underfoot and available in a wide range of colours. Specify a product rated for wet areas with a minimum PTV of 36 wet and a minimum R10 classification -- most major manufacturers produce a dedicated wet room or hygienic grade product. The vinyl must be coved up the wall to at least 150mm using a purpose-made cove fillet, creating a seamless junction that prevents water ingress at the skirting. All joints must be heat-welded, not cold-welded, and all seams must be watertight.
Residents in care homes often stand or are assisted in wet rooms for extended periods. For care types where residents are ambulant (residential, some dementia), consider specifying a vinyl with a cushioned or foam backing, or an acoustic underlay-compatible product that provides some underfoot comfort. For hoisted transfers, the floor surface must be firm enough to prevent the hoist base from sinking -- very soft or heavily cushioned products can destabilise a hoist. Check the hoist manufacturer's surface-loading specification before selecting a cushioned floor.
