What induction training must cover, how often to refresh, and what records CQC expect to see.
Every member of staff must complete fire safety training before they work unsupervised. This is a specific requirement under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Induction fire training must cover: how to raise the alarm, evacuation procedures, the location of fire exits and assembly points, how to use a fire extinguisher safely, and their role in the evacuation of residents.
Annual refresher training is the minimum expectation for all staff. It should include a practical element -- either a live fire extinguisher exercise or simulation -- rather than e-learning alone. Night staff must receive training that reflects the specific challenges of night-time evacuation including reduced staffing.
Fire wardens need enhanced training covering compartmentation checks, sweep searches and reporting to the fire service. Agency and bank staff are a common gap -- ensure all agency workers complete local fire induction before starting a shift.
CQC inspectors will ask to see fire training records during inspection. Records must show the date of training, the member of staff, the training provider, and what the training covered. A simple spreadsheet showing all staff by last training date, with overdue highlighting, is the minimum acceptable.
